Starbucks Evolution: The New Logo

6 Jan

Big news for $5.00 coffee lovers, Starbucks is changing their iconic siren logo. You can read about it on Starbucks Official Site, or read some of the comment battles going on at CNN with their Just In Series. But despite the enormous controversy erupting among die-hard Starbucks fans, the logo is hardly ground breaking. I mean all they really did was remove the company name circling the iconic siren beauty. Wait, is taking your company name off your products a smart idea? Either way, it looks pretty much the same in my opinion.

That mermaid-ish creature that is the ’Siren’ you see in the logo dates back to 16th century Norse wood carvings according to the Starbucks webpage. She was chosen as the logo to represent the beginnings of Starbucks back in 1971 when it was starting its empire in Seattle. Needless to say, she’s been with the company since day one, so it is good to see that she stays with the company into the new year as well.

However, if there’s one thing I’ve learned in my few years in this world, it’s that people generally as a whole hate change. Nobody likes change, once we are used to something it’s so difficult to break away from it, this is especially true among the products we purchase. It’s the main reason that those products we got hooked on as kids have barely changed their branding logo’s, so that years later, we wander down the cereal aisle, and can still find our box of Cheerios, or jar of Nutella. I am impartial to the changing of something as simple as the Starbucks logo, but I am not everyone. Maybe it is wise for Starbucks to keep the majority happy, and maintain their previous logo.

Either way, only time will tell what is to come of Starbucks new branding, as this is not temporary, having officially released the new yesterday January 5, 2011. However the cups look, that ridiculously expensive coffee will still be available so for those of you crying about the logo change, don’t be too upset, people will still know your drinking a Starbucks when you walk down the street clasping it in both hands. The siren lives on.

Trailer Mashups

4 Nov

So you know about music mashups, when 2 or more songs are blended together to come up with something new. What made you think it ends there? There is an ever expanding selection of really well put together movie trailer mashups which I highly recommend taking a look at. Most can be broken into 2 categories, mashups being the audio from one trailer blended over the visuals of another movie. Then theres recut, which is entirely different audio played over a recut selection of clips from a movie. They are addictive and highly entertaining to watch, take a look at my favs below.

Electric and Compacts: They Are Here

1 Nov

So maybe you’ve noticed them on the streets already, or maybe your city has been plastered with billboards of them, there’s no denying, a new era of the automobile has arrived. Who ever believes that all North Americans drive hummers and other excessively large SUV’s is still living that 2002 generalisation. It was hardly true then, and its definitely not true now, its 2010! Let it go.

North American society is ready for the change, then again, it always was. Because after all, nobody wants to intentionally damage the environment, they just never had the opportunity for change. It is evident the worlds auto manufacturers have built it, and yes the people, they are coming.

It appears that things are fast changing, the streets are filled with the likes of Juke’s, Cubes, and Mini’s. And the CRZ’s, Leaf’s, Cruze’s, and Volt’s are on the way. It’s true, insanely small engine, hybrid, diesel, or full electric cars are fast replacing the fleets of models that ruled the streets before. And they’ve come with a variety of entertaining media campaigns!

The Beauty of Time Lapse

29 Sep

I was recently introduced to 2 videos from 2 friends, and I thought they were so good that I was obligated to share them. One video documents Hong Kong, and was shown to me by a friend there, the other is of Mexico City, and was shown to me by a friend who is from there as well. They both deal alot with time lapse, which is quickly becoming a favorite technique of mine, and these works only further inspire me. I think they are well put together, much props to the creators who took so much time to do them, check them out below!

Both are on Vimeo, so check them out here: Hong Kong, Mexico City.

Keeping up with the Joneses

11 Sep

It’s the catch phrase of suburban consumerism, that simple line personifies the human instinct to always do better than our neighbors. When Mr. Jones next door pulls into the driveway in his new Audi S4, you stop mowing the lawn and stare in awe of his new ride. You go over and have a look for yourself, complimenting Mr. Jones on his new purchase, and then get back to mowing your lawn. The next day you’re looking at your old car with dissatisfaction, and you are soon at the Audi dealership test driving an R8, knowing that when you pull into your driveway, all your neighbors will want what you have. Yup, your just keeping up with the Joneses.

Cue in this years film titled just that: The Joneses. The film stars David Duchovny and Demi Moore as they portray a wealthy suburban family moving into a new neighborhood. Their perfect family easily blends into their new community and soon becomes the family that has what everyone wants. They drive the cars you want, they have the phone you didn’t even think was out yet, and they dress the way you wish you looked. However if it all seems to good to be true, then you might be catching on.

That perfect family turns out to be no family at all, instead, they are a corporate team of advertisers working for an agency that places ‘families’ in neighborhoods just to show off the latest consumer products. It all seems so perfect until the father figure Steve Jones played by Duchovny starts to see the crippling effect their sales tactic is having on the neighbors as they desperately try to keep up.

Coming into this film I thought it was going to be a clever and entertaining movie, but as the credits rolled up, it ended as a touching experience as well. The film exposed the tragic reality of how consumerism can push people out of their element, and into a world full of debt and regret. The current economic situation will resonate in your mind as you watch, and start to ask yourself; are you living within your means?

Thumbs up for a quality film that both entertains and leaves you with something to think about. Check out the trailer below.

iPhone 4: Worth Pitching a Tent For?

24 Jun

At 07:00 Thursday June 24, 2010 the new Apple iPhone 4 will be released in the United States, exciting apple fans across the globe. And as with any new release, such as the iPad and the iPhone 3GS etc, there are those hardcore fans that have been lining up outside apple stores across the US. According to this article on CNN, the first was a Dallas man who pitched his tent outside an apple store over a week ago already. If you take a spin down 5th avenue in New York tonight, you’ll probably see the line-up beginning to swell already as that 7am release time creeps closer and closer.

But I have to wonder, is it really worth it lining up for yet another hyped up release of an apple product? Lets look at 5 new features with the iPhone 4.

1.First up, the new iPhone 4 is boasting its new multi-tasking capabilities, now you can run up to 7 app services at the same time. But other smart phones such as the Droid have had unlimited multi-tasking capabilities for a long time already, old news…

2.The iphone 4 has the standard camera on the back, but now also a front facing camera as well for ‘FaceTime’ video calling. Yeah that’s cool, but my Nokia X6 has had that feature long before Apple thought about it. Its technology dating back to 2004.

3.Increased battery life is a new thing for apples latest phone. You would think that as Apple releases more and more versions of the same product, that things such as weight would be decreasing. But that’s not the case, the iPhone 4 weighs more than both previous version of the iPhone. A larger battery is attributed for this, which is a good thing, as the 3GS had one of the shortest battery lives of all smartphones.

4. Optics have been greatly improved and apple is claiming the new version has a display that ‘exceeds what’s perceivable by the human eye’. Maybe, but Apple has been lagging behind other smart phone display quality such as the AMOLED and TFT screens that Android phones like the HTC Evo4 have been using already.

5. The iphone 4 has moved the simcard slot to the right spine, but has switched to micro-simcard format. No longer will standard simcards be able to be used with the new phone. While this may not be a big deal to many. For myself, I value the compatibility a standard simcard format has when travelling etc.

I know I am a notorious Apple critic, but I do think the iPhone 4 is a great phone, just not worth the usual apple hype that goes along with it. Apple has been neck deep in lawsuits over patent infringement with multiple other phone companies over the past couple years, which only makes apples revolutionary claims even more questionable. Apple always does a great job at selling a decently ordinary product at an inflated price, and I’m sure they will continue to do this with the new iPhone 4. I mean what other company can make people call in sick for work, so they can run into a store first thing in the morning, high-fiving people, laughing and smiling as they purchase a mediocre product at steep price. Apple can. So if you feel this apparent breakthrough phone is worth sleeping in a tent on a cold hard sidewalk for a week, then by all means, go ahead, but I wont be there joining you!

Whats wrong with an Orange mini-skirt?

17 Jun

FIFA 2010 is now in full swing as teams begin their second rounds of games this week, but the star players aren’t the only ones creating media buzz during the king of all soccer tournaments. If you’ve been reading up on your news, you may have noticed this story.

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/soccer/dutch-mini-skirt-marketers-1-south-african-police-0/article1606825/

I was reading a copy of the Globe and Mail on my flight home today, and I found this article particularly interesting. Here is the quick breakdown; Dutch brewer Bavaria NV paid for 2 attractive dutch girls to fly to South Africa for the tournament. Once there, they successfully recruited roughly 36 other girls for their mission. The mission? Disguise themselves as Danish fans and attend Hollands first game of the tournament against Denmark. Once inside, the girls stripped off their Danish outfits leaving only tight orange miniskirts and tops bearing the Bavaria NV logo on the back, as they danced together in the crowd. Flaunting the dutch colors and promoting Bavaria NV all at the same time, it didn’t take long for this youtube video to pop up soon after the spectacle.

The girls were quickly escorted out of the game by local authorities and the two dutch girls were charged by south african police with ambush marketing.

As we all know, advertising rights for the 2010 World Cup is a lucrative gig, Adidas and Budweiser pay massive amounts of money for exclusive rights to promote their products during this tournament. Budweiser is claiming it had no part in the events that took place at the dutch game on Monday. The girls have been released on bail, but the story is growing in complications as a british TV commentator recently lost his job when the tickets the girls used were traced back to him. Apparently Robbie Earle, the commentator and former player himself was sacked as it was discovered that tickets issued to him were used by the girls at the Netherlands-Denmark match.

Ambush marketing it may be, but do these girls really deserve to be kicked out of the game and charged just for wearing certain clothes at a soccer match? When did world cup games have a dress code? Is there really that much damage from some attractive women in tight-fitting orange outfits dancing in the stands? I think not.

The Most Interesting Man in the World

31 May

He once challenged his own reflection to a staring contest. On the fourth day… he won. He is the most interesing man in the world.

In my opinion, Dos Equis has come up with one of the most entertaining and effective marketing campaigns in recent years. They feature the most interesting man in the world, sharing with us true facts about his life. He is the epidomy of the word ‘man’, he is everything we want to be, but cant be. He does everything we want to do, he is what every man wants to be. He’s like Chuck Norris, but better. He does things we cannot do, he says things we cannot say, and his advice is unparalleled. So this is my tribute to the most interesting man in the world. Even if we are unable to be like him, we can at least drink Dos Equis.

Stay thirsty my friends.

Nike and Tiger: Did you learn anything?

9 Apr

You’ve heard it on the news, you’ve seen the commercial, and the parodies are already popping up on youtube. There is alot of buzz about Nike’s new commercial, which features a black and white slow zoom of Tiger’s face, with a recording of his father playing over. Check it out:

So what’s going on here? I was scratching my head at first, what’s the point of this ad? We all know about the scandals and turbulance that Tiger has been apart of. When people thought golf, they thought Tiger, he was an icon, but Tiger has been busy chasing tail a little too much during his career and his marriage and it finally caught up with him. He backed out from the golf scene, sponsor’s were dropping him left and right, and finally it went quiet. It seemed we had seen the last of Tiger for a while.

But then this ad comes out of nowhere. Nike is pushing Tiger in our face again, just when we had enough. Is this ad tasteful or disgraceful? That clip of his father speaking, it was never intended for Tiger, it was a recording of his deceased father Earl speaking about his wife Tida, with Tiger’s name dubbed infront. Tiger told reporters: ”I think it’s very appropo. I think that’s what my dad would say and it’s amazing how my dad can speak to me from different ways even when he’s long gone,”.

Did Tiger learn his lesson? Did we learn our lesson about idolizing a golfer? Did Nike learn anything?

All I know is that Nike is getting what it wants, attention, good or bad, they are banking on that old Brendan Behan quote “there’s no such thing as bad publicity”. So bravo Nike, you’ve got us talking, but are we all really thinking of buying new shoes now?
